Blue Light and Hyperpigmentation

Blue Light and Hyperpigmentation

While you have probably heard that blue light is bad for your eyes, did you know it is not good for your skin either? In small doses, blue light exposure has beneficial effects, including destroying diseased cells.

However, too much blue light exposure can damage the skin, causing skin conditions like hyperpigmentation – discoloration or darkened areas of the skin. Common sources of blue light include:

  • LED lights
  • Fluorescent bulbs
  • Televisions
  • Smartphones
  • Tablets
  • E-Readers
  • Handheld video game consoles
  • Other mobile devices

Blue light or HEV light can penetrate deep into the dermal layer of the skin causing damage to the elastin and collagen stored within that skin layer. Blue light damage can result in wrinkles, loss of firmness, dark spots, and hyperpigmentation.

Along with UVA and UVB exposure, blue light causes uneven skin pigmentation that can sometimes lead to age spots and other discoloration of the skin. It effects melanogenesis — the creation of melanin — and can even cause your skin to look gray and ashy.

With continued, unprotected exposure to blue light, you risk a number of often irreversible skin damage. Here are some ways you can protect your skin from blue light.

How to Protect Your Skin From Blue Light

The best way to avoid hyperpigmentation caused by blue light is to protect your skin from coming into contact with this damaging light. Here are some ways to protect your skin from blue light and hyperpigmentation.

Cover Up

Like UV light, providing a barrier between your skin and the damaging effects of blue light can reduce its impact on your skin. Wearing a hat, long sleeves, a cover-all, or cardigans will help reduce blue light transmission.

Wear Blue Light Tested Sunscreen

Wear sunscreen tested for blocking blue light. Most sun care brands do not indicate they have tested their product for blue light penetration.  My Day Screen® blue light products are lab-tested to verify blue light blockage.
